The Rowe

Grand Rapids is a city full of historical buildings and many of them are being converted into condos and living spaces with great stories about the building. The Rowe condos are located in one of the historical buildings in Grand Rapids that have been renovated over the years. Originally opened as The Rowe Hotel in 1923, this 1.5-million-dollar project was way ahead of its time and was built as a new "fire proof" hotel. One of the most famous people to spend the night in The Rowe Hotel was John F Kennedy in 1958 when he made a trip to Grand Rapids. Eventually, the hotel would no longer be the most modern and up to date in the city, which is when it was renamed the Old Manor and converted into a retirement home. Serving as a retirement facility, the property was fully functional until it closed its doors leaving the building vacant from 2001 to 2014. After remaining vacant for that period, there was an announcement made in December of 2014 that there was a renovation project being planned for the building. On the top two floors of this historical building, you can find the nine condo units with spectacular views of the city.

Union Square

Like most condo buildings you see in Grand Rapids today, many of them did not originate at facilities for people to live in. The condos at Union Square have a similar history but rather than converting an unfunctional furniture factory into condos, this building started as a school. The brick portion of the building is the original high school that educated students in Grand Rapids for many years. At a later date, there were some additions added to the building creating more space. The red and black portion of the building was added to increase the size of the building and is now known as the Penthouse and Penthouse Lofts. Some of the character from the original school has been left in the building to maintain the unique history is brings to the condo units inside. Features like chalkboards and banisters have been intertwined with the updates to the building. Some of these old school features have been incorporated into a few of the Union Square condo units giving them an updated modern style with history. Tall ceiling heights give owners the feel of a bigger space and large windows let in tons of natural light.
